As I do each week, I listened to the New Music Friday playlist on Spotify last Friday. I usually scroll through the list first to see if any names pop out. Well, one did, Shawn Mendes. I have never been a big fan of his or anything, but I do like some of his music. So I put on the song, which is called In My Blood, I listen to it and I am really surprised. What a beautiful song!
So I put it on my March playlist, listen to it a couple more times and think that is it. Well, it wasn’t. The next day he releases yet another song; called Lost in Japan. Again, I listen to it. And I have to say, I like this one even more than In My Blood. Also because it’s not really what I would expect from Shawn Mendes. It almost has a Justin Timberlake feel to it, it’s really upbeat and funky. I absolutely love it! I think this song is going on repeat the next couple of months. And after listening to these songs I’m actually excited for his new album, I have no idea when that album is going to be released or how it’s called (I couldn’t find it) But judging on these two songs, it must be great!
In My Blood
I feel like In My Blood is best described as a power ballad. It sounds really good, strong and I love the build-up in it. However, it’s not just a ‘nice to listen to’ song. When you listen more carefully and you look up the lyrics you find out that this song is actually about anxiety. And that just hits close to home for me as someone who has anxiety. So I feel personally connected to this song.
In an interview (which you should definitely watch), he told that In My Blood was the first song he wrote for the new album. He wanted the album to be a little bit more rock, better for stadiums and he was inspired by Kings of Leon. He also said that he wanted this album to be more honest, and that is where In My Blood came from.
When you listen to it, the lyrics seem to be quite sad. I mean, the first word is literally ‘help’. But then the song kind of picks up and ends on a slightly more positive note, telling us that giving up is not in his blood. I think that’s brilliant. The song is about a difficult subject, but at the same time, it’s quite hopeful.
Help me, it’s like the walls are caving in
Sometimes I feel like giving up
No medicine is strong enough
Someone help me
I’m crawling in my skin
Sometimes I feel like giving up
But I just can’t
Lost In Japan
The second song, Lost In Japan, is quite different than In My Blood. Which I like, I really hope the album is going to as diverse as these two songs. Lost In Japan is funky, upbeat and just makes you wanna get up and dance. What a jam! This instantly gets you in a good mood. It doesn’t have a tough subject or a deeper meaning, but that’s most definitely alright. Not every song has to be so heavy. Again, I like the fact that he released a deeper song and just a really fun one.
What I also really like about this song is the little piano bit at the beginning. Just from hearing that I did not expect an uptempo song, so I was completely surprised – in a good way. Also, the bass in this song is incredible! Like I said earlier it has a Justin Timberlake feel to it, which I obviously really like. And that isn’t all that strange, Shawn Mendes actually said that when he wrote Lost In Japan he was actually listening to a lot of JT.
So well done Shawn Mendes! I hope the new album is going to be here soon. I think I’m definitely going to do a reaction video when it does come out. Also, I really like the art for these two new songs. Super simple, but really beautiful. I can’t wait to see the album cover.
